Long Program Description
I.
BACKGROUND

The proposed network is based on a CEEPUS- I. Network (H-0158). The previous coordinator of this Project participated in the program as MSc student in 2001. She has been very enthusiastic and had excellent experiences. The program continued in CEEPUS II. (HU-0023-2007-2008) and lasted till 2007/2008 academic year. In this network 16 partner institutions carried out extensive and effective exchange of students and teachers within the areas of environment-, horticulture-, landscape architecture and food-related studies.
Since the two areas showed a rather low level of compatibility, students and teachers were only exchanged within each field. Thus, it was considered to propose smaller and essentially more focused networks in the next cycle.

The network was coordinated originally by the Hungarian university CUB. In spring 2008 coordination was switched to MZLU.

The coordination meetings organised regularly could give a good platform for network members to get to know each other better, and to solve problems, respectively. While the workshops and excursions within CEEPUS members resulted very good start for further academic cooperation. The network of HU-0023-2007-2008 was decided to be split into two networks due to the high number of participating partners (16) and creating two sub-networks in which the follow-up actions can be more concentrated. The main topic was based on interest of the old partners.

We recognized the need for interdisciplinary approach in landscape management. Therefore our aim is to establish a network with partners representing landscape architecture, spatial planning, forestry, agronomy, horticulture, environmental science (mainly in soil, water and air systems), horticulture, ecology and biology. The final partners are old CEEPUS partners and invited new ones. Invitation based on the most fruitful co-operations among universities in the mentioned topic. (see more e.g. in special merit)
In spring 2008 the coordination of the network was switched from CUB to MZLU.

Introduction

Next challange for all CEEPUS countries is the European Landscape Convention, that introduce the concept of "landscape quality objectives" into the protection, management and planning of geographical areas.

Europe's cultural landscape has undergone notable changes in the last few decades.  Due to restructuring of agriculture and radical socio-economic changes in eastern and central Europe, landscape changes will continue.

There are old cultural landscapes having high qualities, but economic priorities overwrite ecologic necessities. Successive and even devastating landscape changes were recorded, which have left barely any relics today.

There is very often a complex pressure on cultural landscapes threatening landscape qualities.  Modern agricultural practices, urbanization and recreation all threaten the existence of valuable cultural landscapes. We are facing the question: how can old cultural landscapes have a sustainable future, based on sound economic background and how can the commitment of all actors be achieved?

On the other hand the quality of the landscape has influence on people living there. We have to take into consideration environmental psychological aspects.

There are regions in Central and Eastern Europe where tension exists among people/nations.

The partners in our network try to ease this tensions by joint efforts.

Working methods - networking
